We’re looking for the next great News Applications Fellow to work with ProPublica’s world-class news applications desk.
To give you a sense of the work you’ll be doing, here are examples of what your predecessors have done: Our first Fellow built our Nursing Home Inspect app as well as the Pipeline Tracker, which is as far as we know the first news application and reported story that share a single byline. The second Fellow helped build Free the Files, one of the most ambitious journalistic crowdsourcing projects ever, and completely revamped our hugely popular Dollars for Docs, nabbing the first byline on the latter. The third Fellow will be you.
It's a great fellowship for, among others, a coder who's civic-minded and interested in working with journalistic problems and data sets, or a j-school grad who wants to tell stories with code, or a digital humanities student looking to try their skills in journalism. You’ll work side-by-side with the best newsroom developers on the planet, on some of the biggest and most innovative projects in investigative and data journalism. You will leave here a better journalist, a better designer and a better developer.

What matters most to us are your project URLs, not whether you have a specific degree (the team is a mix of humanities and journalism majors, in fact). We’re looking for somebody with pretty solid skills in Ruby, Javascript or Python (we're a Ruby shop but Python skills are easily transferred). But more importantly, we want to see work that shows you’ve got a journalistic mindset. The term of art is “editorial judgment” what we mean by that is this: You know a story when you see one, and you’re learning how to tell a story using code. Send us a few URLs of your best work. Student assignments are fine. If you’ve got just one really great project, that’s fine too. Quality counts more than quantity. Let us know exactly what part you played in the projects. Designer? Coder? Reporter? All/none of the above? Etc. Also, send us your github account name.
The Fellowship lasts up to a year and is paid $800/wk with benefits. It's full-time and requires that you work in our offices in New York City. Start date is around the end of August.
