ProPublica is looking for a senior editor, visual storytelling, to lead and oversee our visual and multimedia efforts. This role will serve as the creative mind behind our biggest stories and series, marshaling the efforts of teams across the newsroom to elevate our work, make it resonate with readers and maximize its impact.
The person in this position would oversee a top-notch team of people who help tell our stories using graphics, photography, illustrations, multimedia presentations and code. Since this team touches every story we produce, the job will also involve working with reporters, editors and other teams, such as audience, platform and data, to produce rich and cohesive packages. Beyond our newsroom, this position would also involve being the creative liaison to the myriad publishing partners we work with, from major daily outlets to small news websites.
Strong editorial judgment and experience with managing staff in a growing mission-driven newsroom with exacting quality standards are priorities for this job. But one of the most critical aspects of the job will be what you can tell us about how best to create high-caliber work like our projects on the Navy, industrial air pollution, the secrets of the ultrawealthy, a medical device maker, land conservation, an American charity in Liberia and climate change in California. In this position, you’ll have the unique chance to shape our visual and multimedia efforts, identify areas we need to bolster and help us build a well-oiled machine.
What we’re looking for:
A strong track record of overseeing online visual journalism, such as illustrations, photojournalism, interactive graphics and custom story layouts, especially on investigative and explanatory projects but also on quicker-turn news stories.
Experience directing visual journalists on stories that have complex or abstract points and need creative approaches to their presentation. Demonstrated expertise knowing when to “go big” vs. when to use the simplest effective means to tell a story.
The ability to demonstrate visual thinking and decisions through an open, collaborative process that incorporates sketches, mockups, wireframes and other tools as needed.
The ability to think ambitiously about multimedia storytelling and work with graphics and video journalists to conceptualize and execute seamless presentations.
Someone who can work in a way that’s guided by ProPublica’s growing design and UX standards, in cooperation with our design and product team.
Experience working with audio, video and graphics.
Experience with visual storytelling across multiple platforms, including the web, social platforms and third-party news apps.
Proven project management skills.
A proven history of leadership, including: managing high-performing visuals teams; managing journalists focusing on storytelling that pushes technological limits; managing people who code; identifying, recruiting and nurturing diverse journalistic talent; relationship-building across a newsroom; strategic thinking about how to best deploy and grow resources; and improving processes that encourage collaboration and communication.
This position would report to our two managing editors.
We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities. We are an equal opportunity employer and prohibit discrimination and harassment of any kind. All employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age or any other status protected under applicable law.
If all of this sounds exciting to you, you can apply using this form. We do not accept applications via email. We will begin reviewing applications as we receive them, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.
We’d love to see a portfolio with your application. Our goal is to gauge your problem-solving and visual storytelling skills. We would like to see artifacts such as: delivered product, complete designs, sketches and any write-ups you may have that explain the process and decision-making that went into the work. Please include a link or attachment with at least two projects when you apply. If you need some other way of showing us your work (either by emailing it or through an online real-time screen share), please mention it in the space provided on the application form.
This job is full time and includes benefits. ProPublica is based in New York, but we’re open to remote candidates. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. Send questions to [email protected]. No phone calls, please.
