ProPublica is looking for research reporters who are available to work on projects.
What We Do:
Research reporters work collaboratively with ProPublica colleagues across a wide range of topics. We investigate people, companies and government agencies; search court records; conduct academic literature research; track down publicly available data and curate original datasets for investigations.
What We’re Looking for:
We sometimes have the need for additional help on longer term projects: populating original datasets, conducting thorough searches in legal databases, investigating specific individuals and more.
Relevant Skills:
The general skills we’re looking for could include:
- Demonstrated ability searching legal resources such as PACER, Courtlink, Westlaw or local court systems.
- Demonstrated ability using aggregated public records such as Nexis, TLO, Accurint or Pipl.
- Ability to review large document sets and extract relevant information with accuracy.
- Facility searching social media.
The tasks you'd be doing could include:
- Conducting legislative histories of specific policies.
- Conducting broad news searches, including for video or audio assets.
- Conducting academic or archival research.
- Create original datasets from publicly available data.
We’re looking for people who are detail oriented and good communicators.

We’ll be looking at applications on a rolling basis as projects come up. Based on your skill level and experience, we’ll talk about hourly, daily or weekly rates on an individual basis. You can work remotely from anywhere in the United States, as long as you can stay in touch with the Eastern time zone.
