ProPublica is looking for a temporary copy editor to join a growing team focused on maintaining the high quality of our stories and publishing our work online. You’ll get to flex your editing muscle not only complex and lengthy investigations, but also on breaking news stemming from our deep dives, newsletters, graphics, videos and columns. (And you’ll also be on the lookout for the little things, like the missing “on” in the previous sentence.) As ProPublica expands into the South and Southwest, and grows its presence in the Midwest, you’ll have the opportunity to edit journalism that aims to spur change across the country. You’ll also at times have to convert stories from the style of a partner newsroom into Associated Press style (so long, rëelect; hello, reelect!). Other responsibilities will include helping draft corrections, clarifications and updates to stories.
We’re looking for someone who:
Has razor-sharp news judgment and an unshakeable sense of fairness
Knows how to bulletproof and polish hard-hitting investigations and longform narratives
Is meticulous in examining copy and matching facts in text with those presented in graphics, video and on social media platforms
Can make sure all copy is consistent and typo-free
Has experience working with Google Docs and publishing tools, including a CMS like Craft or Wordpress and an organization app like Trello.
Has at least three years of experience as a copy editor at a news organization
Has a deep understanding of AP style
Really likes working with others and is part diplomat, seamlessly handling requests both large and small from reporters and editors
We don’t expect everyone to have all these skills. And we know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.
ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of the ProPublica staff.) We’re committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
If all of this sounds exciting to you, apply using this form. The deadline for applications is Oct. 25 at 11:59 p.m. PST.
Please note this job is a temporary position until Dec. 31, 2021, and is full time including benefits. ProPublica is based in New York City, but we are open to remote applicants.
You can send questions to [email protected]. No phone calls, please.
