ProPublica is seeking a talented interactive designer to help us advance the design and UX of our main website and supporting editorial platforms.
You will be a part of our growing Design & Production team, focused on building forward-thinking site and story features. You will be at the epicenter of one of the most exciting newsrooms in the country, building user experiences for some of the most important investigative journalism anywhere. Every day will be a chance to work in an environment where design is integral to the mission.
We’re looking for someone with:
- The ability to take a design from initial sketches to finished webpages.
- Experience prototyping interactivity and demonstrating design ideas to a group.
- Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS and modern web design tools like Sass and jQuery.
- Mastery of common visual design tools, like Photoshop, Sketch.app, etc.
- A proven track record iterating designs based on user needs and stakeholder feedback.
- Solid knowledge of UX fundamentals.
- Photography and illustration skills are a plus.
The ideal applicant cares deeply about editorial content and is a thoughtful, passionate advocate for the user. They are also organized and detail-oriented.
We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our own staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages, and we’re taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
The position is based in our headquarters in New York City. This is a full-time position, with benefits and a competitive salary commensurate with experience. This is not a data journalism or reporting job, but you will interact with people doing that kind of work on a daily basis.
What you should send us:
Send us a link to your portfolio. If you don’t have a portfolio, please send links or screenshots of projects you’ve worked on and describe in detail how you contributed to them. Tell us what worked, what might not have, and how that fit into the context of what was needed for the project.
We know there may be great candidates reading this who may not fit into what we’ve described, or who have alternative skills that could bring a lot to this position. There also may be candidates who psych themselves out of applying even if they would be great at this job. If any of that describes you, please don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself. We look forward to reading all applications.
