Local Live(s): A Storytelling Event About Secrets

Join ProPublica and Back Pocket Media for Local Live(s), a night of live storytelling and entertainment bringing together investigative reporters and community members.

ProPublica journalists who cover the South will share the stories behind their published stories — parts of the reporting process that were particularly fraught, intriguing anecdotes that didn’t make it onto the page or the circumstances that brought them to a subject in the first place. Think of it as a live podcast all about reporting in the region we love.

The theme of our show is “Unseen: Stories About Secrets, Hidden Truths and Shining a Light into the Darkness.”

The event will also feature live music from The Baffour Collective and storytelling from culture journalist Mike Jordan. Guided by host and ProPublica South editor Mara Shalhoup, these ProPublica reporters will tell the stories behind their work:

  • When Max Blau learns a toxic secret about America's most popular dishwasher detergent, he decides to trace the supply chain from start to finish.
  • Nicole Carr receives secret recordings that send her on a year-long journey to understand the rising tension in school board meetings across the country.
  • Seth Freed Wessler sees something he’s not supposed to: what life is really like in an ICE detention center at the height of the pandemic.

Local Live(s) is sponsored by the Meta Journalism Project.
