Lessons Lost: The Historical Shortcomings of the Bureau of Indian Education

Join ProPublica and the Arizona Republic for a live digital conversation on tribal schools, the future of the Bureau of Indian Education and alternative educational approaches developed in tribal communities.

In partnership with Arizona Republic.

The Bureau of Indian Education, which serves over 46,000 Native students across 23 states, has for years failed to fulfill its mission of providing a quality education. For the past year, ProPublica and The Arizona Republic investigated systemic flaws within the agency, from the BIE’s failure to equip Native students with computers during the pandemic to its delay in fixing long-standing violations of federal accountability and special education requirements.

Join ProPublica and the Republic for this live digital conversation on the complicated history of, and current challenges within, the BIE. Our panel of Native American education leaders, along with journalists, will discuss their experience working with tribal schools, the future of the BIE and alternative educational approaches developed in tribal communities. Panelists will also answer your questions about addressing the disparities within the BIE system.

Speakers will include:

  • Adrianne Elliott, senior legislative associate of the National Indian Education Association
  • Joe Garcia, head councilman of the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo
  • Genevieve Jackson, McKinley County Commissioner and Dine Bi Olta School board member
  • Mary Hudetz, ProPublica reporter and former president of the Native American Journalists Association
  • Alden Woods, reporter for The Arizona Republic
