ProPublica's Opportunity Gap Project Featured on WNBC New York

The school year may have only just begun, but NBC's News 4 New York team found that there is already a striking difference in courseload between poor and rich schools in the state.

Using data from ProPublica's Opportunity Gap project, Chris Glorioso reports that New York state ranks second in the country when it comes to students passing advanced placement exams but falls within the bottom 20 percent when it comes to enrolling poor students in AP courses—a form of "soft discrimination" that some experts predict will soon become a crisis for New York state and the country at large.

ProPublica reporter Sharona Coutts sheds light on the issue and she was joined by Prof. Pedro Noguera who heads the education program at NYU. Watch the full segment below and check out ProPublica's Opportunity Gap project here.
