The RTDNA Foundation, the charitable arm of the Radio Television Digital News Association, announced Tuesday that ProPublica won a 2024 First Amendment Award. The award honors individuals and organizations that exemplify responsible journalism and practice their constitutionally guaranteed duty to seek and report the truth. ProPublica was selected for “its groundbreaking approach in a challenging industry and its consistently excellent journalism that exposes wrongdoing and makes communities better.”
“We are deeply honored to receive this award,” said Stephen Engelberg, ProPublica’s editor in chief. “Reporters in the United States and around the world face mounting pressures — from the collapse of the business model that sustained journalism to the efforts by governments and wealthy individuals to punish outlets that challenge them.
“Thanks to more than 50,000 donors, our mission of publishing stories that spur change remains viable. But we are aware every single day of the privilege of being a journalist in a country where the role of journalism is enshrined in our Constitution.”
