The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) nominated ProPublica for one of its 2016 Ellie Awards, which honor excellence in print and digital media. The nonprofit newsroom was recognized as a finalist in the Feature Writing category, along with The Marshall Project, for their collaborative feature An Unbelievable Story of Rape.
Co-written by ProPublica reporter T. Christian Miller and The Marshall Project’s Ken Armstrong, the piece focuses on the harrowing case of a woman named Marie who reported being raped at knifepoint, only to be doubted by the police and charged with making a false accusation. Chronicling the brilliant work of two detectives who eventually solved the case, it shows the best and worst of how law enforcement responds to reports of sexual violence.
The piece notably brought together two competing reporters, who were investigating the case separately before deciding to join forces in order to produce the best journalism.
You can view a full list of nominees on the ASME website. Winners will be announced on Feb. 1 at the annual Ellie Awards dinner in New York.
