Have a crazy idea on how investigative journalism, community engagement, technology and social media converge? Let’s talk.
Our team at ProPublica is expanding. We are hiring a senior engagement fellow to work on investigative projects, building community and growing the ProPublica audience.
What you’ll do:
You’ll be a key part of our “no-bullshit” engagement team, scheming with traditional reporters on ambitious investigative projects and using social to tell smart stories.
You’ll help research and reach communities for stories and be responsible for conceiving and executing plans to pull readers into our reporting. The work can be as low-fi as a flier, or as buzzy as a tweetstorm. Whatever is best for the story and community.
You’ll be using our social platforms not just to promote stories but rather as places to publish them. That means things like this, this, or this.
What we’re looking for beyond just crazy ideas:
Journalism experience, especially involving hard-hitting stories that shed light on injustices.
Somebody who’s used the social web to do, you know, journalism.
Somebody who is excited to find and reach communities actually impacted by a story, get them to inform our work, and someone to be a central player in the storytelling on all platforms to maximize the resonance of the project.
A fluid, creative, sensitive — even a little snarky — writer, interested in communicating with people in 140 characters or 140,000 characters.
Are you a newshound? We like that.
Have any design or multimedia experience? Are you an animated .gif connoisseur? We like all that too.
A good listener — this includes on social media and all around the web. We want to understand what the conversation might be around a particular topic — and then turn that insight into actionable items.
What does some of this look like?
Take a look at a project we’ve done about Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange. Unlike traditional investigations, we didn’t start with a story. We announced that we were doing an investigation with a callout to the community. We asked vets to tell us their stories, and we’ve now heard from more than 7,000 of them. The community we built fueled our reporting, and it’s already getting results.
We want to hire journalists who bring a diversity of experiences, talents and viewpoints to their work. So, if you don’t think you can check off every box on the list above, but are confident you can contribute to our efforts, please don’t hesitate to apply.
ProPublica is dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. Therefore, we are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.
To apply, fill out this form. This job will be based in New York. Pay is $800 per week and includes benefits. The job will run through 2017.
The deadline for applications is May 12.
