ProPublica is seeking a talented, versatile full-stack developer to advance the functionality and design of our website and platform-level projects.
This is a new position at ProPublica. It will be at the epicenter of one of the most important and exciting news organizations in the country. Every day will be a chance to make a difference in an environment where smart engineering and thoughtful design are integral to the mission.
This position is responsible for collaborating directly with the business-side staff and newsroom leadership to improve our core site, implement new tools to support our expanding business operations, and find useful, delightful ways that technology can help us do our jobs better.
We have ideas about what you’ll do here — from helping us create better dashboards and reporting tools for our analytics to wrangling the systems that let us keep in touch with our growing donor base — and we hope you have ideas of your own.
The ideal candidate should have at least some of the following:
The ability to take a request from initial specifications and designs to finished webpages
Experience prototyping interactivity, demonstrating ideas to stakeholders and incorporating their feedback
A track record implementing and iterating webpages based on stakeholder feedback and user needs
Mastery of HTML, CSS and modern front-end web tools like Sass and jQuery
Knowledge of a common back-end language such as PHP, Python or Ruby
Familiarity with common CMS templating systems such as Twig or Liquid
Solid knowledge of UX fundamentals and a demonstrated passion for the user
The person in this position will own the integration of some of the common third-party tools we use. Familiarity with these services — or their competitors — is helpful. Relevant areas include: Analytics (we use Google Analytics and Chartbeat), Email Newsletters (Pardot), Fundraising and CRM (Salesforce and Pardot), Comments (Disqus), and Advertising (DFP).
We are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply, including women, LGBTQ people, people of color, and people with disabilities.
Email [email protected] to apply. Include a resume and links to examples of your work, along with a brief explanation discussing them. This position is based in our newsroom headquarters in New York City and cannot work remotely. It is full-time with benefits and a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
