ProPublica Illinois is seeking a communications manager to help support the launch of our first regional publishing operations.
The communications manager will be responsible for outreach with media, community, and other partners within Illinois and nationally, helping to introduce, establish, and promote ProPublica Illinois as a brand consistent with our editorial mission and core values. On a day-to-day basis, the communications manager will be responsible for spearheading outreach surrounding our stories, working closely with the audience engagement team to identify and build relationships with key audiences.
This person will work closely with the New York-based director of marketing and director of public relations on a variety of other tasks, including helping to develop, execute, and promote a series of local events; drafting press releases and other posts on our website about our work; managing the development of accurate local and state press lists; responding to media requests; compiling media clips; and contributing to our annual and periodic reports to stakeholders.
Our ideal candidate is someone with proven marketing savvy who is passionate about journalism that serves the public interest. This role will report to the director of business development and work closely with the editor-in-chief of ProPublica Illinois.
Qualifications
3+ years experience in marketing and public relations, including at least some for a news organization
Superb written and verbal communication skills
Impeccable news judgment and experience vetting/verifying information on deadline
Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and environment
Strong team player with desire to collaborate with others
Strong organizational and time management skills
This full-time position will be based in our Chicago office, located in the Loop.
