GLAAD announced that ProPublica had won its outstanding digital journalism award for Sergio Hernandez's article "Sex, Lies and HIV: When What You Don’t Tell Your Partner is a Crime," published in partnership with Buzzfeed. The award was announced at GLAAD's 25th Annual Media Awards in New York City on Saturday.
The article explored the history and repercussions of state laws that criminalize sex without the disclosure of HIV status -- even when the virus is not transmitted. In addition to a gripping narrative, Hernandez compiled information from 19 states, creating the largest database of cases in which people have been convicted of, or pleaded guilty to, criminal charges for not disclosing to sex partners that they were HIV-positive.
