The American Society of Magazine Editors has named ProPublica a finalist in three categories for its 2025 National Magazine Awards, also known as the Ellies, which honor excellence in print and digital journalism.
ProPublica is a finalist in the category of general excellence, news, sports and entertainment.
“Eat What You Kill,” by J. David McSwane, co-published with the Montana Free Press, is a finalist in the profile writing category.
“The Year After a Denied Abortion,” by Stacy Kranitz and Kavitha Surana, “Abortion Bans Have Delayed Emergency Medical Care. In Georgia, Experts Say This Mother’s Death Was Preventable,” by Surana, and “A Pregnant Teenager Died After Trying to Get Care in Three Visits to Texas Emergency Rooms,” by Lizzie Presser and Surana are finalists in the public interest category.
ASME also named its finalists for its Design, Photography and Illustration awards. ProPublica is a finalist in three categories. The finalist for best illustrated stories was a partner project.
“Still Born,” by former ProPublica engagement reporter Adriana Gallardo, reporter Duaa Eldeib and interactive story designer Zisiga Mukulu is a finalist in the best news and design category.
“The Year After a Denied Abortion,” by Kranitz and Surana is a finalist in the best news and documentary photography category.
“The Genesis of Christian Nationalism,” by Phoebe Petrovic of Wisconsin Watch through ProPublica’s Local Reporting Network, with illustrations by Nate Sweitzer for ProPublica, design by Anna Donlan, and art direction by Peter DiCampo, is a finalist in the best illustrated stories category.
