The American Society of News Editors has named An Unbelievable Story of Rape, a joint investigation by ProPublica reporter T. Christian Miller and The Marshall Project's reporter Ken Armstrong, as a finalist for its 2016 award for non-deadline writing.
The result of 12 months of reporting, the piece focuses on the case of an 18-year-old woman who was raped in a Seattle suburb, only to be disbelieved by police and charged with a crime for false reporting. From there, Miller and Armstrong recount the work of two women detectives who eventually solved the case, illustrating the best and worst of how law enforcement responds to reports of rape.
Honoring exemplary print, digital and video content, the ASNE Awards narrowed its 28 finalists from more than 300 entries. Winners will be named next week.
