ProPublica announced on Friday that it hired Molly Redden as a democracy reporter. Redden joins ProPublica from HuffPost, where she investigated a host of powerful organizations and political figures as a senior reporter.
During the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, she scrutinized Kamala Harris’ record as a “progressive prosecutor” and, with a colleague, revealed how Sen. Amy Klobuchar had abused her staff throughout her political career.
Redden’s recent reporting uncovered a series of all-expenses-paid luxury trips for Trump-appointed judges funded by right-wing billionaires. This spring, she broke news that Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor had taken unusual medical precautions while traveling, spurring a national debate over whether Democrats ought to call for her retirement.
Before joining HuffPost, she was a senior reporter at Mother Jones and the Guardian US covering gender issues and reproductive rights. Hers was some of the first reporting to shed light on the profound consequences of the anti-abortion movement’s growing success. In a 2016 investigation, she documented how one Catholic hospital’s refusal to provide emergency abortions endangered the lives of five different women. While covering the underground world of self-managed abortions, she shadowed a Texas woman who flew to Mexico City in search of abortion drugs because she could not afford the procedure in the U.S.
“Molly has a keen eye for revelatory stories across the political spectrum,” said Tracy Weber, ProPublica’s managing editor for the national staff. “With the nation focused on the presidential election, we are thrilled to bring her talents to our democracy team.”
