ProPublica and The Lens won their first gold medal in the Society For News Design’s "Best of Digital Design Competition" for "Losing Ground," as announcements of the winners began trickling out over the weekend.
The project, which won in the features coverage category, is a breathtaking interactive package exploring the effects of human activities -- namely, climate change, drilling and dredging and levees -- on the shrinking coastline starting from 1922. "That map does things we haven't seen before," SND judges said. "It's an amazing project."
ProPublica’s "Treatment Tracker" won a silver medal in the information graphics, planned coverage, category for its parsing of a huge database of 2012 Medicare payments to individual doctors and other health professionals.
Congratulations to all of this year’s winners so far.
