ProPublica announced Thursday that Jeff Frankl has joined the newsroom as an editorial experience designer. In this role, Frankl will work to advance design and user experience, collaborating with editors and reporters to find engaging new ways to tell stories.
Frankl comes to ProPublica from the software and data analytics company Azavea, where he was a user experience designer for civic technology projects involving voting, environmental protection and disaster response. He was the design lead for DistrictBuilder, an open-source redistricting tool that helped make the process of drawing electoral maps more transparent and representative of communities.
As a lecturing professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Design, Frankl taught a software development course for city planners. Frankl, who has a sociology degree from Haverford College, also previously worked as a paralegal at the Juvenile Law Center. He is based in Philadelphia.
