ProPublica announced the hiring of Dan Phiffer as senior engineer, web and publishing products. In this new role, Phiffer will focus on improving ProPublica’s core publishing systems and will help lead upgrades to the organization’s website.
Before joining ProPublica, Phiffer worked at The Markup, where he played a pivotal role in developing and maintaining its website and releasing open-source tools; he occasionally contributed to editorial projects. Previously, he worked at the American Civil Liberties Union, building data APIs and special projects.
“Dan brings a wealth of experience in building innovative web platforms and tools that push the boundaries of publishing technology in public media organizations,” said Ben Werdmuller, senior director of technology at ProPublica. “His commitment to the open web and support for impactful journalism align closely with ProPublica’s mission.”
