The Society of American Business Editors and Writers (SABEW) announced today that ProPublica’s Cezary Podkul is this year’s winner of the Larry Birger Young Business Journalist Award. The annual award recognizes excellence from journalists under age 30.
Podkul was honored for his reporting at ProPublica and other outlets, including Reuters, where he worked before joining the non-profit newsroom last year. His first series for ProPublica, Tobacco Debt: How Cash From Big Tobacco Went From Boon to Burden, revealed how bond deals struck between state governments and Wall Street turned a historic 1998 legal settlement with cigarette manufacturers into a legacy of debt.
Podkul will receive the Birger Award on Oct. 9 at SABEW’s New York Fall Conference. Read more about the award here.
