ProPublica announced Thursday that Anna Donlan will join its staff as an interactive story designer. In this role, she will work with reporters and editors to create rich story experiences — from designing custom story layouts, to building multimedia features, to experimenting with innovative story and graphical forms.
Donlan comes to ProPublica from Quartz, where since 2019 she was Quartz Creative Studio’s associate design director, working on award-winning interactive storytelling projects.
Previously, she worked at Pentagram design studio as a multidisciplinary designer, art directing print magazines and leading site redesigns. Prior to Pentagram, she was the digital art director at Texas Monthly, where she transformed print stories into immersive digital features, including the oral history of Hurricane Harvey, and developed a visual voice for online articles and videos.
She will start at ProPublica on Sept. 19.
