Electionland: The Inside Story

The Electionland newsroom, hosted at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism on Election Day (John Brecher for ProPublica)

The Google News Lab commissioned a case study on Electionland, a journalism project that ProPublica helped organize and participated in last year. The report was released today and is available for download.

The 66-page report was researched and written by Cassandra Lord, a writer and consultant based in London. It’s being released on the first day of the Collaborative Journalism Summit, a conference taking place this week at Montclair State University in New Jersey.

N.C. Governor Loses Re-Election Bid, Attempts to Hold Power by Claiming Voter Fraud

While much of the country debates President-elect Donald Trump’s baseless claim that millions of people voted illegally in the presidential election, the Republican governor of North Carolina is attempting to use an accusation of voter fraud to hold on to his office. After losing by less than 10,000 votes, Gov. Pat McCrory has refused to concede, alleging improper vote counting, dead people and felons swung the vote for his Democratic challenger, state Attorney General Roy Cooper.

There’s No Evidence Our Election Was Rigged

President-elect Donald Trump took to Twitter on Sunday to claim that he would have won the popular vote “if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.”

There is no evidence that millions of people voted illegally. If there were, we’d have seen some sign of it.

After Electionland: How it Worked, What We Found and What’s Next

The results are in. The country has a new president-elect, and over 1,000 people joined Electionland to cover voter accessibility and obstacles at the polls on Election Day. The project was done in collaboration with the Google News Lab, Univision, USA Today and WNYC. Today, ProPublica’s Scott Klein, Celeste LeCompte and Jessica Huseman take us inside the project, which was one of the largest newsrooms in the country on Election Day. They walk us through the reporting process, share some surprising findings and talk about what’s next for large-scale collaborative journalism.

Disabled Voters Face Obstacles at Polls

Most of us take for granted that when we go to vote, we’ll be able to cast our own ballots. But for disabled people, there’s no such guarantee.

Rob Kerney assumed he would be able to vote in private for the first time Tuesday. Because he is blind, Kerney needs to use audio voting equipment or have someone else help him mark his ballot. When he went to vote in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, a poll worker gave him some bad news: His polling place didn’t have the correct headphones to use with their audio voting machine.

Progressive New York One of Last States in the Country to Have No Early Voting

New York may one of the most reliably blue states in the U.S., but it's got one of the lowest voter turnout rates. One reason? It's one of about 20 states that has no early voting at all. It doesn't even have no-excuse absentee voting. Despite efforts by advocacy groups and state lawmakers, at least 10 bills related to early voting have stalled in the legislature since last year. WNYC reporter Karen Rouse explores why.

Voters Encounter Problems, But Not The Ones Most Feared

For all of the ways the 2016 presidential election was extraordinary — particularly Donald Trump's repeated assertion that the vote was being "rigged" — the actual balloting on Tuesday was largely without serious incident.

What We Don’t Know: The Full Effect Of Voter Suppression and Voter ID Laws

As we and others have extensively documented, voters are facing a range of barriers this election, from shuttered polling places and long lines to new, stringent voter ID laws, largely pushed through by Republicans and disproportionately affecting minority voters.

Why Doesn’t NYC Set Up Voting Sites the Night Before Election Day?

This morning, a few New York City polling places opened late because ballots and poll books were misdelivered. Some voters waited as election officials looked for and retrieved the correct materials. Others voted by affidavit ballot instead, and some left.

These New York Women Had Trouble Voting. Then They Spoke to Electionland.

Univision reports that two Hispanic women in New York had trouble trying to vote and almost gave up, but after speaking to Electionland, they managed to cast their ballots.

Viral ‘Rigged’ Voting Machine Video Actually User Error

This post has been updated and expanded.

A video being passed around on Twitter has lit the fuse under claims of a “rigged” election, as a voter repeatedly tries — and fails — to vote for Trump. No matter how hard the voter pushes, the machine won’t change the ballot from Clinton.

Ohio Man Alleges Disenfranchisement Due to Criminal Record

Cleveland.com reports that a man with a felony record filed a complaint that a poll worker told him that he was not allowed to vote because of his criminal history.

Video That Purports to Show New Orleans Machine Miscounting Votes, Actually Shows Nothing of the Sort.

In New Orleans, Electionland partner The Lens debunked a video that purported to show pollworkers discussing how a machine already had votes on it before anyone voted. (Which, again, didn't happen!)

Some Durham, North Carolina Districts to Stay Open Late

The Scalawag reports that The Durham County Board of Election extended voting hours in some precincts because of problems with electronic voting rolls this morning.

A gunman opened fire near two polling locations in Los Angeles County, killing one person and injuring three, authorities said.

The circumstances of the incident were unclear, but the Los Angeles Times quoted an unnamed law enforcement official as saying one of the victims was on the way to vote. The Azusa Police Department said two of the three shooting victims were in critical condition.

Fraudulent Fliers Make Their 2016 Appearance

One of the oldest dirty tricks in the Election Day book is the distribution of fliers intended to prevent people from casting their votes. Some of them seem far fetched, but others have the potential to keep people away from the polls. Here’s a rundown of the worst fliers we’ve seen. To be clear, every one of the claims on these fliers is a lie.

Voters Missing 2nd Page of Ballot at Some Chicago Polling Places

Voters in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs were not able to able to turn in complete ballots after volunteers at polling places forgot to hand out a second page before entering the voting booth, the Chicago Patch reported. The information came via Electionland's tip line.
