Join Us For Our Women In The Newsroom Tenement Talk

In honor of Women’s History Month, ProPublica and the Tenement Museum are sponsoring a public conversation titled “Women in the Newsroom: From the Fashion Pages to the Front Lines.”  The Investigate This Tenement Talk will take place on Monday, March 12 at 6:30pm Eastern at the Tenement Museum, located at 103 Orchard Street (at Delancey).  Dan Abrams, a legal analyst for ABC News and the founder of Abrams Media, will moderate the conversation.  The featured panelists include:

·         Robin Fields – before she was promoted to senior editor, Fields wrote an award-winning ProPublica investigation about dialysis treatment in America.  As an editor, Fields oversaw reports on the military’s handling of traumatic brain injuries and post-Katrina acts of violence committed by the New Orleans Police Department.  Prior to joining ProPublica, she helped break the Norman Hsu fundraising scandal for the Los Angeles Times.

·         ProPublica reporter Kim Barker is the author of the critically acclaimedThe Taliban Shuffle.”  Barker was the South Asian bureau chief for the Chicago Tribune and was based in New Delhi and Islamabad.  Before joining ProPublica, she was an Edward R. Murrow Press Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations.

·         Nikole Hannah-Jones joined ProPublica’s reporting staff late last year.  Previously, she covered governmental issues, the census, and race and ethnicity for The Oregonian.  She has been honored three times with the Society of Professional Journalists Pacific Northwest Excellence in Journalism Award.  Hannah-Jones has also reported on the racial achievement gap for the News & Observer in Raleigh.

·         Amy Tennery is the managing editor of the Jane Dough.  Prior to that, she worked as an editor of the business news site Mogulite and was a reporter for the real estate trade publication The Real Deal.  Tennery’s work has been syndicated in the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Slate and other publications. 

Abrams, who is also the author of “Man Down: Proof Beyond a Reasonable Doubt That Women Are Better….,” and the panelists will discuss how they broke into the news business, differences for men and women reporting in war zones, whether gender is a factor in handing out assignments and much more.
